In Search of a Homeland: The Story of the Aeneid

A great abrev of Virgil s Aeneid for young Roman historians - This book makes the story of Virgil s Aeneid much more understanderable. Neatly bound in hardback, it is illustrated with colour pencil drawings throughout although the connection with story can be slightly difficult to tell - not ideal as a picture book for talking through the story. At the rear is a map to follow the journey and some notes on name pronounciation. It is said to be suitable for key stage 2 and 3 English reading, but whilst it may fit with historical studies of the Romans, I would not advise this book for key stage 2, at least not until later years, since the vocabulary is still fairly complex, with lots of names to follow. Changed from the original is the reordering of the beginning to avoid the confusion of a flashback to the fall of Troy after Aeneas has started his journey to found Rome, when he landed at Carthage enroute. In Carthage, Aeneas find a love interest in queen Dido who kills herself when he leaves to fulfill his destiny. Follow the travels of the new leader of the Trojans, with his family, to get to Italy and then battle with the Latins for the land.I have found this book very useful for revision of the Aeneid for A level classical civilisations, summarising the English translations of the Latin epic well, whilst maintaining the activity and description of the original, although simplified.
